Farther west on Texas 71

with 8 comments

Heading west from Austin along TX 71 on the morning of April 23rd, I’d stopped west of Spicewood for the pictures that appeared in the post two days ago. Having made a U-turn for that stop, I needed to turn around again to continue westward. Given the fast-moving traffic on the highway, safety had me turn into a nearby street and go around the block there. Sometimes little side roads provide big benefits, picture-wise, and I had an intuition that this one might. Sure enough, one property in that little settlement was covered with wildflowers. The erect white-flower-topped plants are old plainsman (Hymenopappus scabiosaeus); the yellow are greenthread (Thelesperma filifolium); the red are Indian paintbrush (Castilleja indivisa).

A little later I stopped along TX 71 in the vicinity of Horseshoe Bay in Burnet County for great mixed colonies of greenthread and Indian blanket (Gaillardia pulchella) in the depression that flanked the road.

I call to your attention Ian Oxnevad’s timely April 30th article “Today’s Campus anti-Semitism,” which draws parallels with devastating trends and events a century ago.
