Volo Bog lushness
Now that you’ve seen a few closeups of plants at the Volo Bog State Natural Area in Lake County, Illinois, on June 7th, here’s a wide-angle view showing the lushness of the bog.

I like the way you put that: green on green on green.

I love it too. It becomes a study in texture and shape, then.

Yay for texture and yay for shape, along with the nuances of green.

True, yet the author of the Grey made a fortune. That’s not going to happen to any nature photographer.

It is, but I didn’t get bogged down in it.

Apparently Volo Bog is a quaking bog? Did you notice any quaking?

The only quaking I noticed was our own on some of the floating walkways through the bog.

I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a photo that so strongly evokes the painting of Henri Rousseau. I keep looking and looking, trying to find the tiger or monkey or toucan that surely is hidden in the midst of all that verdant leafiness. Rousseau said about his visits to the Botanical Gardens in Paris, “When I go into the glass houses and I see the strange plants of exotic lands, it seems to me that I enter into a dream.” That’s what this photo feels like: a dream, that I want to walk into.

Just call me Douanier Steveau. I don’t just believe but know that no one before you has ever compared a photograph of mine to the paintings of Rousseau. Merci.
If this is a dream, then we walked into it and emerged in the light of day. I hope you’ll get the chance too.

It looks like something from the tropics rather than from the north-central part of the United States.
