I’d forgotten that a year ago today we saw this great sunset at Napier.

  4. That’s an El Greco sunset if I’ve ever seen one. it’s so dramatic — not pretty, in a conventional sense, but soul-stirring and a little raw. It’s good that you have a photograph to bring it back to mind.

    • “An El Greco sunset” is a unique way to describe it. What element(s) of the photograph caused you to see it that way?

      • The color and the play of light, I suppose. Even though El Greco has only two extant landscapes, and there’s no evidence that he ever painted a sunset, I imagine that any sunset he might have painted would look like this: not pastel and pretty, but bold, with dark and deeply saturated colors.

        • Your “bold, with dark and deeply saturated colors” made me imagine I was reading an ad for a brand of coffee. The fact that I have some freshly brewed coffee at hand may have something to do with that.

  5. Amazing… we’ve just moved to Gore, Southland, NZ and saw a sunset like that from the house last night. We immediately jumped in the car and took off out into the farmland, all the better to admire the display overhead!

    • I looked up Gore on Google Maps to see where it is and discovered that we passed through it on our way from Invercargill to Dunedin. Then I looked at the photographs in Google’s sidebar and recognized a couple of the views. Yours of the sunset last night was better than what Google showed.

      • That was Sunday night and the beauty was only fleeting. Happily, as we drove out into the farmland the colour in the west got ever brighter changing from an initial lemon colour to bright orange, then pink, then red. If Nigel got a decent photo or two I might be able to do a post.

  6. Magnificent. I didn’t notice any spectacular sunset tonight but I did notice the sky darkening just that little bit earlier. 😦 Daylight saving hours will soon be officially over.

    • And here, of course, it’s the opposite, with the days lengthening, the deciduous trees beginning to leaf out, and some of the early spring wildflowers putting in an appearance.

      • Lovely……. and in my inbox Air NZ sent me their latest special fare to Houston. It was so tempting!

        • The marketing folks at Air NZ must know what they’re doing, now that cooler weather is on the horizon down there.
