New Zealand: crossing Cook Strait again

A year ago today we sailed eastbound on the Interislander from South Island to North Island. I took the first photograph when the ferry was almost out of the Marlborough Sounds, and the second one four minutes later after the ship had entered Cook Strait.

    • By the third time, the ferry ride was somewhat routine. The trip as a whole was indeed exciting.

  4. Feathery clouds are one thing, but you’ve captured both down and feathers — as well as a variety of blues. That looks like perfect sailing weather. Did you ever see sailboats out there?

    • I don’t recall seeing any sailboats out in the strait, which I’ve read has difficult currents. I do remember seeing smaller craft in the Marlborough Straits, closer to the ferry terminal end than to the open sea end.

  5. Your photos make me want to explore NZ more. If only that flight wasn’t such a turn off.

    • The non-stop flight from Houston to Auckland might be the longest flight I’ve ever taken. It was not fun, especially because of the difficulty of sleeping in a small, uncomfortable seat—and I’m short.

Two ways to mitigate the unpleasantness of such a long flight are: knock yourself out with a sleeping pill; stop off in one or more places along the way.

    • It was with a photograph taken from the Interislander that I began showing pictures from NZ three years ago.
