Just after sundown on June 4th

with 14 comments

Just after the sun had gone down on June 4th behind the mountains to the west of Morrison, Colorado, I hurried to find a place where I could pull over and photograph this colorful blimp of a cloud.* The time was 8:28 PM Mountain Daylight Saving Time.

* I originally wrote “this colorful cloud zeppelin.” Then I changed it to “this colorful cloud blimp.” Later I wondered if it should be “this colorful blimp cloud.” Finally I hit upon the happy solution “this colorful blimp of a cloud.” Now if I could just figure out how many angels can dance on the head of a pin….

  1. No wonder you stopped. That’s a world-class cloud, with beautiful color. I like the second, smaller downrange cloud, too. It’s a nice complement.

As for your final editorial decision, the rhythm of it appeals. It fairly begs to be transformed a bit, as it already evokes another famous line you’ll remember: “What if a bit of a blimp of a cloud…”

    • But speaking of rhythm, you still haven’t told us which ones of the angels can dance on the head of a pin.

They know how to do world-class clouds and world-class mountains in the West.

  3. Comes quite close to look like in the movie “Independence Day”, doesn’t it? Very colourful, but also somewhat ominous, to my mind. Great picture, Steve.

    • We lucked out that evening, both in seeing the cloud and finding a place to pull over and take pictures.
