A twist on twistleaf yucca
Here’s an abstract and minimalist closeup of twistleaf yucca, Yucca rupicola. In a photograph posted two years ago today I played up the characteristic way the leaves of this species twist, but what caught my attention here was the blemish on a non-twisted part of a yellowing leaf. This latest take is from the right-of-way beneath the large power lines near Yaupon Dr. in northwest Austin on February 14th.

I like the simplicity. It focusses the eye right on the subject.

I find that simplicity is often a virtue.

“Simple Gifts” was the song for our wedding.

Like many people, I’ve always thought that “Simple Gifts” is a traditional Quaker hymn, meaning that we don’t know who wrote it, but in looking up the song just now I learned that its composer is known:

Marine-grade power cords generally are yellow, and a marine grade power cord with a problem looks pretty much like this. If this were a cord, the problem could have been that this section of cord was close to a connector that shorted out, burning not only the connector, but also the covering.
I don’t know what the explanation for the blemish on the leaf might be, but it’s quite a coincidence that it was under some power lines.

I’ve been under those power lines often enough, as they’re the same ones that run west of Morado Circle, where I’ve taken plenty of other pictures that have appeared here. A few years ago I was surprised to see a house get built under those power lines, and I wondered if there might be a long-term effect on the residents (aside from a certain grimness that comes from having to look at the wires and the big towers supporting them). On the other hand, I’ve found plenty of blemishes on plants that are nowhere near any power lines. Our associations are understandably with the things we’re familiar with, which for you often means things nautical.
