Southern dewberry flowers
And here, on this first official day of spring, is a soft, asymmetric, and abstract side view of two southern dewberry flowers, Rubus trivialis, that I found on February 27th near the railroad tracks that run parallel to Mopac a little north of US 183.
In the three weeks since I took this picture and the one you saw last time, dewberry flowers have been popping up in many places around Austin.

Southern dewberry bud
On February 27th, near the railroad tracks that run parallel to Mopac a little north of US 183, I found a colony of southern dewberries, Rubus trivialis. At the bottom of the picture you can see some of the many recurved prickles I had to deal with as I got down low to photograph the bud that rose slightly above them. I wrote “rose” advisedly: if this bud looks somewhat rose-like, it’s because dewberries and roses are in the same botanical family.
