There’s an adage that one good turn deserves another, so here’s the view from the ventral side of the gulf fritillary butterfly, Agraulis vanillae, that you saw from behind last time. The conspicuous white patches on this side make for quite a different appearance.

  1. I always thought that the pattern was the same on both sides of the wings. Where ever did I get that idea? Both great shots, btw.

    • Thanks, Ken. I’ve learned that the patterns above and below can be very different, as in this case.

  2. There’s a lot of ‘hardware’ under there. I like how the hairy spines of the plant reflect that and the fuzz.

  5. That took a moment to process visually – so unusual!

    • Glad you got it. I’d have preferred the butterfly’s head to be a bit further away from the plant’s stem, but sometimes I have to take what I can get while it’s still there.

  7. Part of the fun of this one was imagining the position of the photographer. My goodness! I can’t remember ever seeing a butterfly’s face before – what a wonderful shot. (And like the others, I’m surprised by the different patterns, top and bottom.)

    • Truth be told, I was in a pretty normal stance for this one, as opposed to some of the contortions I’ve gone through for other pictures I’ve posted here. Good luck in seeing more butterfly faces in your future wanderings in nature. Call them happy faces if you wish.

  8. Nice photo. Gulf fritillaries are among my favorite butterflies. I love the coral on the underside of the wings, that you captured here.
