A fourth color for paloverde

with 11 comments

Because the paloverde tree, Parkinsonia aculeata, is a member of the legume family, it produces pods. Those pods start out green, but as they age and dry out they turn brown, as is apparent in this detail of one. If you see a resemblance to a peanut it’s not coincidental, because peanuts are also members of the legume family. And if the sky looks preternaturally blue-indigo, even though the picture was taken near noon, it’s because I used flash to allow a smaller aperture and greater depth of field that would keep most of the pod’s contour lines in focus.
